A new layout-design is typically the result of immense investment, both in financial terms and in terms of the time and effort of highly qualified experts. In order to prevent unauthorized copying of layout designs and to motivate for investment in this field, the layout design (topography) of integrated circuits is protected under Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design Act (SICLDA) 2000.
